Groundhog Day Activities

Groundhog Day Activities for teachers and students- hands on crafts, reading activities, books, and predictions. Groundhog Day fun in the classroom
Groundhog Day is coming soon! It was always really hard to fit into my schedule because the 100th Day of School always happened around the same time. I am collecting several Groundhog Day ideas for you guys so that you can start plugging them into your lesson plans! Happy predicting!

Start with these 3 Great Read Alouds.
These three books are always my favorite Groundhog Day books! Here are a few affiliate links to Amazon.

Use these in Small Group!
It would be fun to use Groundhog reading material in your reading groups. These two leveled readers are great for independent reading in primary grades!

Learn what Groundhog Day is! Read a nonfiction passage.
This Groundhog Day flip book tells the students WHAT Groundhog Day is and why it is celebrated. So, after their fictional read alouds, students will grasp an idea of what Groundhog Day is, so this will solidify their new knowledge. You can also read this passage first to give them background knowledge before reading their fictional stories.

Don't want such a big craft? Here is a nonfiction/fiction paired passage from my Winter Differentiated Texts. There are three levels for your readers in your classroom

Get mathematical!
Groundhog Day is the perfect holiday for predicting and graphing. Predicting whether or not the groundhog will see its shadow is always a great math lesson for the students. Then, being able to test their theories is also quite fun for them to use their data to compare.

Faith used my Groundhog Unit in her classroom and wrote about it on her blog. This was her model for the classroom that she did under the document camera.

And finally, get crafty!
Check out these absolutely adorable crafts I pinned to my February Activities board.
