Getting to Know St. Patrick

St. Patrick's Day Activities- learning the history and biography about St. Patrick- great for social studies content

During St. Patrick's Day, I have always focused on leprechauns and rainbows and pots of gold, but this year, I'd like to take a different approach. I'd like to spend time learning about the history behind St. Patrick's Day, focusing on ELA while learning some history!

My idea for this anchor chart is to get the kiddos to write on Post-it notes and fill up any prior knowledge they have on St. Patrick and then asking questions on him, as well!

(From the History Channel)

After we discuss our prior knowledge and identify our questions about St. Patricks, we will watch the video on St. Patrick from the History Channel, then really dive into reading!!

American Symbols

American Symbols Activities to teach students all about the American Symbols- hands on activities to tie in social studies content- reading, writing, and research activities

My kiddos LOVE the American Symbols unit.
They always love to research and learn about the different symbols. I made a new ELA pack this year to supplement our research and learning.

Anchor charts are always a great way to focus in on a mini lesson before teaching any content (science or social studies).

Here is a look at the Statue of Liberty's work.

Passage with text-dependent questions.
Have students highlight their answers in the text and restate their questions!

Students should write facts in their fact sheet before their final informational writing text!

And for fun... time for a flip book!!

And here is a peek at working with all of the American Symbols:

Mini book with FACTS.
This is a great way to teach bullets and fact writing. I always tell my students when we use bullets, we can write our thoughts and phrases instead of full sentences.

Leveled Readers

Organizing your leveled readers at small group time- leveled readers or mini books to use in small group

Anyone have readers all over the place? Some low kinder. Some high 3rd.
I know as a teacher, I've never had a group of kids without huge gaps in their reading skills. So I've decided to try a new reading pack to help with this gap!

Last year, during Daily 5 and small group, I ALWAYS had to keep a schedule for myself or I'd absolutely lose my mind!
Using my small group template (FREEBIE ON GOOGLE DRIVE), I organized some spring readers!
