Setting Up... Calendar

Here we go for number 4 for our Setting Up Series. This week, we are going to talk about CALENDARS! First, I put a group of 'setting up' images to show different ways to set up your calendars using your classroom wall spaces. Then, I found several brilliant bloggers who came up with some really smart hacks to make classroom calendar very easy!

A new popular option is using white boards and painters tape. I love the way that this blogger set up her calendar with magnets. The dates are big enough so the kids can see important dates from their seats.

Love this calendar math column next to her calendar. Great idea! Number of the day changes daily (obviously), so Angela simply erases the marker each day. This would be a great opportunity for classroom leaders to take leadership as well.

I love how Farley set up clocks that show what times the important events are during the day. This creates a need for students to constantly utilize their calendar area. It makes it very meaningful. Great blog post outlining calendar, too!

Setting Up.... Word Walls

Blogging here for my summer Setting Up series! I am having so much fun collecting ideas and sharing them with you. Today, we are going to chat about classroom word walls. There are many different options for word walls, but the vast majority of primary classrooms use word walls for sight words and high frequency words. I will show a few ideas for math word walls or even content words. I hope you find some great ideas today!

If anyone is like me, setting up the word wall is MUCH easier than keeping up with the word wall throughout the year. I can help you with the first part and merely give you motivation to keep up with it during your busy school year. ;-)

If you have very limited space in your classroom, this is a great idea. Put your word wall on a ring. Your students will use the word wall as they need and you save wall space.

This idea is great. Her blog post talks about the importance of using different colors on the word wall to help students differentiate the types of words, such as contractions, sight words, names, and more!

I predict a trip to the dollar tree to pick up an index card holder. What a good idea to hold all the word wall words until they are used!

Setting Up The Wall
Here is the fun part! This is the part we are all really excited about. The summer set up. The cute and fun taping, decorating, and measuring. Here are several different ways to assemble your word wall.

Setting Up.... Small Group

Last week, I blogged about setting up your classroom library. This was so much fun for me because that's my favorite area in a classroom. This is the 2nd edition of the Setting Up series. This week's post focuses on small group nooks! Small group is a staple in most classrooms, but sometimes, they can be tough to keep up with or keep organized. I hope to bring you some ideas and inspiration for your small group nook!

When setting up and teaching small group, it is very important three key points.
*Student ENVIRONMENT
*Teacher DATA TRACKING
*Material ORGANIZATION

[Focusing on Organization]
Paper work, books, pencils, pens, highlighters, witch fingers, white boards, expo markers, sentence strips, and more! Small group area has a LOT that goes with it. And organizing it isn't always easy. Here are a few ideas that I found that may help you out!

The guided reading bucket is a huge life saver because you can carry it with you wherever you go. Love this idea from Teaching in High Heels where she keeps them all in one place.

Color coordinate your baskets to help keep your groups together.

Back to color coding. This is from my blog post where I talk about each of my groups being a different color and I kept their folders and paperwork in color coordinated drawers.

[Focusing on Student Environment
Student environment is what I consider to be what the kiddos see when they sit at the table with you. The colors, the chairs, the bulletin boards, the place mats in front of them. Basically, this key point of small group is another way of saying "pretty spaces". Here are a few pretty pics that I found from other bloggers and myself that may inspire some fun decorating!

I love this idea to have each kiddos have their own work areas.

[Focusing on Teacher Data Tracking]
Data, data, data! Keeping up with all the paperwork is a very vital part of small group. I found a few pins and blogs that talked about the wonderful ways to track your data and keep you ahead!
