Nonfiction and Fiction Book Hunt

Nonfiction activities- helping students find the difference between nonfiction text and fiction text- text feature search activity- nonfiction reading passages
Time for nonfiction! I'm loving it! The kiddos are, too.
Today, we focused on simply distinguishing between fiction and nonfiction text. I used my fiction vs. nonfiction activity from my Nonfiction Comprehension set. I premade this anchor chart, gave directions, and the kiddos got to work.

I laid out my books and let my kiddos go searching! They had to find one nonfiction book and write the title on the pink post it note. Then, they had to find one fictional story and write it on the green post-it note. When they were done, they stuck them up to the fiction and nonfiction anchor chart.

They got a pink post-it for nonfiction and a green post-it for fiction.

Then, as a class, we checked over the titles to make sure everyone's sounded correct.

Then, we did a mini lesson on text features and worked through a cut and paste together.
These activities are both in my nonfiction unit! This was a big step for them, so we did a lot of guided practice together. We used one book under the document camera for a sample.

Fluency Activities and a Leprechaun Visit

Monday, two naughty leprechauns visited our classroom!

Note is VERY hard to read in the picture.
In the corner, you will see Luke the Leprechaun. He was our 'Elf on the Shelf' leprechaun throughout the week. Our entire school did this and it was so fun! I hid him in a new spot each day.
Well, Luke decided to write my class a note. It reads:

"Dear Ms. Tobin's class,
I saw two naughty leprechauns ruin our class. I tried to stop them, but they jumped out the windows!
Love, Luke
p.s.- I did see them leave you guys some treats on your teacher's desk."

I wrote it with my left hand so the kids wouldn't immediately recognize my writing!

And of course, they got to write about their experience with the leprechauns.

This ficitonal writing page comes from my March On-the-Go. The students had to write a fictional story about their naughty leprechaun. Grab that here!

Students were practicing for quite a bit before we began.
They had to recite their lines several times before performing.

Here they are presenting to their friends.

STEM- M&M Soaking (FREE Recording Sheet)

STEM activities- hands on science experiment- M&M soaking STEM activity

This week's visit to the STEM lab was fun!
Whenever M&M's are involved, it is a good time.
We used water and baby oil to see how M&M's would respond to both liquids.

Pour it in.

After a while, in the water, the M&M will lose it's coloring and the M will slowly float to the top of the water and completely disconnect from the candy.

The kids used a sheet in their learning logs to write about what happened.

What is 4 Cubes Long? FREE Math Activity

Check out my students having a blast on a hunt.
I challenged them to find things in the classroom that were the length of 4 connecting cubes.
They were nuts about finding things!

I told them if they found something that was 4 units long, I would take a picture of it. I felt like I was being attacked! I heard "Ms. Tobin" every 1 second, but I loved it!

Here is what we found.
