Language and Reading Skills Centers

My school does 'Core Extension', which is a 45 minute daily block where students split up to another class. We have five first grade teachers, and during Core Extension we each teach a leveled group:  low, medium low, medium, high medium, and high. I teach the medium groups, which is just an extra extension of our daily learning. During my Core groups, we just work on a lot of practice.

We worked on basic reading skills this week! It was a busy week for us with parent-teacher conferences, field trip planning, and report card assessing.

Just want to post a quick blog post about a few very BASIC ideas for reading centers.

Really Good Stuff Digraph Envelope sorts
There are also beginning blends that I bought. We love it.
Filling in the blanks on blend words.
Found in my Blends Bonanza pack!

Reading to Self:
Use Sit-Upons and whisper phones to help students want to read!

Write the room:
Find all of the sight words you can in the classroom.

Reading out of our basals...
If you're anything like me, you've completely abandoned using basal texts to teach reading. The kids still LOVE using the text books, though! The feel so big and proud when they get to use their text books to read to their partners.

And technology!

Sorry! It's been 10 days since my last post. Before that, it had been a while, too.
On the side panel of my blog, it tells how many blog posts I have during each month and OMG!!!! October has been absolutely miserable and lonely! So many apologies.

  1. I love the way your school splits up the students into groups. You are really able to target certain students. Great ideas!
