Paper Mache... (Yes, l Have Lost My Mind)

A team teacher and I decided that we wanted to do something unique for the end of the year. Our Art funding has been cut tremendously at our district (which I'm sure you're experiencing a similar cut). Our students had one quarter of art because we share our art teacher with our entire district. I thought it would be really fun if we could do something artsy with the kids.

So, we tried it out! And the kids loved it.

Materials Needed:
Tissue Paper

Make sure you cut up LOTS of newspaper and tissue paper for the kids.

Day 1
Kids get their balloons.
Make the flour and hot water paste.
Students dip strips of newspaper into the mixture.
Criss-Cross the newspaper strips around the balloon to interlock them for security.
Allow to dry.

Day 2:
If balloons are dried... use the same paste and get the balloon wet.
*Do not dip the tissue paper into the flour/water mixture because we found it just dissolves.**
Students put tissue paper squares on the wet balloon and use wet fingers to flatten down to the ball.

Finished Product!

Allow to dry over night.

Tomorrow, I am turning them into hot air balloons by attaching painted milk cartons to the bottom with string!

  1. You are so brave! I made these hot air balloons when I taught a craft class, but we used plastic strawberry baskets for the baskets after the kids wove ribbon and yarn through the basket. I never thought of using milk cartons. You just might inspire me to try paper mache with my kiddos!

    Leaping into Teaching

  2. So cute! I have wanted to try paper mache with my kiddos! But I am a little nervous that it will be an incredibly stressful experience! haha!

    The Price of Teaching

  3. WOW I think I want to do paper mache too.

  4. This is so beautiful and I can't wait to see the finished product especially as full hot-air balloons! I could just imagine all students just LOVING this activity.

  5. Balloons look wonderful and they can be used for different purposes. They look nice in decoration of any party. Nowadays there are variety of balloons available which can be used for the decoration. Sometimes the party are based on themes so these balloons also come according to the theme. Children like balloons very much, they play with it. The above idea is good to keep children engage in doing something. I like the idea and i will definitely use it when required. I like the creativity done by these children. i love balloons.I ordered very special balloons from postal flowers, they were amazing. You can refer this for further information
